Bone Fractures

When cancers spread to the bones, it may cause a variety of problems, such as pain , elevation of calcium levels in the blood or fracture of the bone. Fractures mostly occur when cancers spread to the long bones (arm or leg bones). Such fractures are referred to as "pathological fractures" and are more difficult to treat than regular fractures. These fractures are most often treated with orthopedic surgery and radiation therapy. The underlying cancer may also need to be treated with proper chemotherapy.

On many occasions, where the cancer has spread to the bone, and even before any fractures occur, we proceed with surgery to stabilize the bone and prevent fracture. This may be accomplished by placing a metal rod inside a long bone. Radiation therapy is almost always used to control the cancer at the site of fracture.
