Bone Scan

Bone scan is a radiological study that is his is an x-ray study that is performed in a radiology office or at a hospital.  Patients receive and intravenous injection of a very small amount of radioactive material which circulates in the blood and gets absorbed in the bones throughout the body.  Areas of the bone that are not healthy, either due to an infection, cancer metastasis, fracture or a healing fracture, absorb this radioactive material differently.  A radiologist will interpret the images and provides a report of his findings to your doctor.

During this procedure, patients lay on a table and special bone images are taken by a camera. These images are then studied by and analyzed by computer and the results are reviewed by a radiologist. This test is a very good screening test to detect various problems of the bones.  Below is a bone scan image the whole skeleton.
