Bowel Obstruction Bowels Obstruction is a unique complication of cancers that spread to the abdominal cavity and result in encasement and obstruction of bowels. The obstruction can take place in upper part of bowels, presenting with nausea and vomiting or in lower part of bowels that can be associated with additional symptoms of abdominal distention and cramping pain. Treatment of this complication depends on the overall status of the patients. In those who are in rather good condition, surgery is the preferred method of treating bowel obstruction. In patients with terminal cancer, where the risk of surgery can be very high, conservative treatment is more appropriate. Naso-gastric tube, that is to drain the contents of stomach is commonly used to alleviate the distention of abdomen. |
