Carcinoembryonic Antigen (CEA)

CEA is a molecule that may be present and detectable in blood of some patients with cancer. It is most often present in tumors of Colon, Lung, Stomach and Breast.  CEA may or may not  be detectable in such patients and lack of its presence does not mean that cancer is not present.  Some tumors secret CEA in blood, some do not.  Once present in blood, it can be used to follow the course of disease and its disappearance may mean that cancer has been properly treated.
