Colonoscopy

Colonoscopy refers to the procedure by which the inside of the large bowel is visualized. This is normally done by introducing a tube-like apparatus inside the rectum and advancing it higher throughout the length of the large bowel.

The equipment used is called "Colonoscope." It is flexible and soft. There is a light source inside the scope and an optical passage to see inside the colon. Flexible scopes use fiberoptics to transmit light and images. The performing physician can look for any abnormalities and take a biopsy from any abnormal area. A Colonoscopy examines the entire large bowel.
