Cystoscopy

Cystoscopy refers to the procedure by which the inside of the bladder is visualized. This is normally done by introducing a tube-like apparatus into the bladder . The equipment used is referred to as a "Scope". It is either flexible and soft, or rigid. There is a light source inside of the scope to see inside of the body. Flexible scopes use fiberoptics to transmit light and images.

In patients with early stage bladder cancer, a physician can attempt to remove most or all of the cancer from the bladder. This is done at the time of Cystoscopy, wherein the physician is enabled to see the sites of damage and remove them. This procedure is known as Transurethral Bladder Resection.

In some patients, cystoscopic surgery of prostate, known as Transurethral Prostate Resection, may be appropriate.
