Dilantin

Dilantin is one of the older drugs, and have been around and in use for decades.  It is rather well tolerated, yet has some side effects.

Indications in cancer patients:

It is commonly used for management of seizures and in patients with brain metastasis.  Dilantin comes in a pill form, as well a liquid and injections. The type and severity of the  condition   will determine the method and schedule of administration of this drug. This decision is made by the medical oncologist.

Side effects:

The degree and severity of the side effects depend on the amount and schedule of the administration of Dilantin. Following are some of the most common and important ill effects that are most seen with the long-term and or high doses of Dilantin. If used for a short period of time, the drug is normally well tolerated.

When taken over a protracted period of time, it can cause:

  • Coarsening of facial features

  • Enlargement of lips

  • Swelling of gums

  • Excessive facial hair growth

  • Enlargement of lymph glands

  • Autoimmune conditions, such as Lupus and Immunoglobulin abnormalities

It is imperative that patients relay any side effects or problems to their medical oncologists.
