Fosamax

This is one of the newer medications that have been release to the market for prevention or treatment of Osteoporosis.  This medicine interferes with absorption of calcium from bones, thereby slowing down the process of bone loss. In addition there may be slight increase in deposition of calcium on to the bones as well.   In a handful of clinical studies, this medicine has shown positive effect in terms of helping with reduction on the rate of progress of Osteoporosis.

The medicine is to be taken first thing in the morning with a large glass of water and on empty stomach. This will increase its absorption and its efficacy.  Breakfast is to be 45 to 60 minutes later.

Side effects:

Most noticeable side effects are stomach discomfort or irritation of esophagus.
