 Why to test?

It is only through extensive education and brainstorming that one can come to the decision of being tested.  Testing may not be appropriate for everyone.  One has to assess the potential risks of harboring a predisposing gene.  In addition, we should know about the potential intervention and treatment options.

Positive tests results can clarify individual's risk of developing a particular cancer.  Individual can use the information and consider choosing a useful medical intervention.  Others may choose to have a close follow up and frequent medical assessment.  Information may increase the chance of preventing a deadly illness.

There is a basic difference between genetic testing and other medical tests.  Genetic tests can tell:

·         Where the cancer may start, i.e. Breast, Ovaries, Colon, etc.

·         When approximately the cancer can surface, i.e. years before the cancer appears.

·         Some tests can even determine the possibility of a complex series of cancers occurring in multiple organs.

The bottom line is:

INFORMATION IS POWER
