Gleevec (imatinib mesylate) or STI571

Gleevec was is breakthrough medicine for treatment of CML.  The mechanism of action of this drug is quite interesting and is one that evolved after better understanding of molecular basis of Philadelphia Chromosome.  This drug has been available since 2001.  It is most commonly used in treatment of the following cancers:

Chronic Myeloid Leukemia

Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumors (GIST)

The type and extent of a cancer will determine the method and schedule of administration of this drug. This decision is made by the medical oncologist.


Side effects:

The degree and severity of the side effects depend on the amount and schedule of the administration of Gleevec.  Following are some of the most common and important ill effects:

  • Nausea and Vomiting  Taking Gleevec with a meal and a large glass of water may reduce these effects.

  • Fluid Retention, Swelling around the eyes and/or of the lower legs.

  • Muscle Cramps

  • Diarrhea

  • Skin Rash

  • Indigestion

  • Headache

  • Joint Pain

It is imperative that patients would relay any side effects or problems to their medical oncologist.
