In Situ Cancers

In Situ cancers refer to the very early stages of cancers and their appearance under microscope, as well as their behavior. These are significantly less aggressive than regular cancers and can be easily cured. These cancers are primarily found in patients with early stages of the few cancers which can be detected by screening tests.

Breast Cancers

  • Lobular carcinoma in situ. This condition is considered to be a marker for increased breast cancer risk. Treatment of this condition is rather controversial.

  • Ductal carcinoma in situ. This condition is being seen more frequently with the increased use of mammograms. Average age of patients with this condition is 55-65. The patient may notice a lump in her breast. There is a 30 to 50% chance of developing aggressive breast cancer following this diagnosis.
