Interleukin-2

Interleukin-2 is one of the newer chemotherapy drugs which has been around and in use for some years. Interleukin-2 is a white powder which, when prepared for use, becomes a clear, colorless liquid. It is given by intravenous route or injection under the skin. It is most commonly used in treatment of the following cancers:

The type and extent of a cancer will determine the method and schedule of administration of this drug. This decision is made by the medical oncologist. Interleukin-2 is normally given daily for a number of days.


Side effects:

The degree and severity of the side effects depend on the amount and schedule of the administration of Interleukin-2. Patients who receive intravenous high doses of IL-2 are normally admitted to a hospital and are placed under close supervision and monitoring for side effects. Most patients will develop major complications, but side effects are manageable. On the other hand, IL-2 can be injected under the skin, with much less side effects.
