News on Breast Cancer

1. Genetic testing, Risk Assessment and Counseling for Breast cancer patients and their female children.  Who is at higher risk to develop breast cancer?  Who should be tested?  What can be done about it?

2.  Breast cancer can spread to bones and cause complications, such as fractures, etc. These complications can be reduced by using Aredia, or Zometa which appears to be able to prevent such problems. When cancers spread to the bones, they can cause destruction of bone tissue (lytic lesions.) Such bone problems are quite common in patients with metastatic breast cancer. Aredia should be used in all patients with breast cancer who have even slightest evidence of such bone lytic bone lesions. The results will be better if this treatment is started early on. It is given as intravenous treatment once a month for a long period of time.

3.  New genetic testing can predict risk of recurrence of breast cancer.  Oncotype DX is a diagnostic test performed on the tumor tissue that quantifies the likelihood that invasive breast cancer will return, or recur. This test is most useful in deciding about chemotherapy for women who are at intermediate risk or recurrence assessed by clinical evaluation.
