Nexavar (sorafeinib)

Sorafenib is an anti angiogenic agent with other anti cancer efficacies as well.  The main method of action of this drug in targeting kidney cancer seems to be its anti angiogenic effect.  This drug inhibits other intracellular pathways as well.

The recommended dose of sorafenib is 400 mg ( two tablets, each 200 mg) taken twice daily. Dose reductions to 200 mg twice a day may be indicated for some patients.

 

Side effects:

  • diarrhea,

  • hypertension,

  • nausea, anorexia, and vomiting.

  • Increases in liver function tests levels

  • Liver Toxicity.  This drug is not recommended for patients with severe liver dysfunction.

  • Electrical conduction problems in the heart,

  • Hypertension.

  • Bleeding

  • Hand Foot syndrome, which is redness of the hands and feet

  • Bowel perforation

  • Heart attack.
