Octreotide (Somatostatin)

Octreotide is one of the newer drugs. It has been in use for a few years. It is an active medicine against symptoms of Carcinoid tumors. The type and extent of a cancer will determine the method and schedule of administration of this drug. This decision is made by the medical oncologist. Octreotide is normally given as an injection under the skin every eight to twelve hours.

Side effects:

This drug is rather well tolerated and has minimal side effects:

  • Gallbladder stones

  • Fluid retention

  • Loss of appetite

  • Diarrhea

It is imperative that patients relay any side effects or problems to their medical oncologists.
