Cancer Prevention

There are two different approaches to the prevention of cancer:

1. Avoiding factors that are known to increase the risk of developing cancer: Avoid smoking, high fat diet, low fiber diet, and exposure to asbestos, radiation and sunburn.

2. Incorporate factors that are known to reduce the cancer risk:

  • Add more fiber and vegetables to your diet.

  • Choose most of your food from plant sources.

  • Eat plenty of fruits and vegetable every day. Other foods with origin from plants are: breads, cereals, rice, gains, pasta and beans.

  • Be physically active. Do some exercises every day. Even just going for a fun walk.

  • Stay fit and within a healthy weight. Lose weight if you are overweight.

Do antioxidants work? Do they reduce the risk of developing cancers? Selenium, alpha-tocopherol, and the Carotenoids have been hypothesized to protect against some cancers because of their antioxidant activity. Despite all that is said about them, there is no clear-cut evidence of any antioxidant being able to reduce the risk of developing any cancer.

Artificial Sweeteners? Do they cause cancer? Many studies have shown no link between artificial sweeteners and risk of developing cancer.
