MedroxyProgesterone Acetate ( MPA ) Provera

This drug is a synthetic steroid which has been in use for a few decades. It is most commonly used in treatment of women with recurrent or advanced endometrial cancer. It is also used by gynecologists for treatment of excessive vaginal bleeding. Progestins refer to different types and preparations of progesterone, female hormone, which can be used in treatment of different illnesses, including cancers. MPA ( Provera ) comes in both oral preparation or long acting injectable form (Depo-Provera). The optimal dosage of oral MPA is still under investigation. The type and extent of a cancer will determine the method and schedule of administration of this drug. This decision is made by the medical oncologist.


Side effects:

The degree and severity of the side effects depend on the amount and schedule of the administration of Provera. Following are some of the most common and important ill effects:

  • Tendency to form blood clots in extremities, which may lead into difficult complications

  • Irregular Vaginal Bleeding, spotting

  • Change in menstrual flow,

  • Fluid retention and swelling of legs

  • Change in weight, increase or decrease

  • Liver damage

  • Disturbance of sleep

  • Fatigue, weakness

It is imperative that patients would relay any side effects or problems to their medical oncologist.
