Cancer Screening

By cancer screening, we mean to evaluate all healthy individuals in an attempt to detect cancers at very early stages.

PAP Smear is a routine test for early diagnosis of uterine cervix cancer. This test is done on women as soon as the are sexually active. It is best to do this simple test every year. This is normally done by a gynecologist or primary care physician. Any abnormal report should be discussed with a gynecologist. If a test is positive for cancer, an appropriate work up should be initiated.

Mammogram Women should do a self breast examination every month and be examined by their physicians at least once a year. Women above age 45 should have a yearly mammogram. If two consecutive studies are normal, then mammograms should be done ever other year. Women above age 65 should have a mammogram every year. Women who are at higher risk of developing breast cancer should begin mammograms every year at an early age.

Flexible Sigmoidoscopy, Colonoscopy, are a simple tests that has a higher accuracy in detecting colon and rectal cancer. A tube is inserted inside the rectum and is advanced into the large bowel. The performing physician can look for any abnormalities and take a biopsy from the abnormal area. Almost 50% of colorectal cancers are within the reach of a Sigmoidoscopy.

PSA is a simple blood test. An elevated PSA blood level would give hint to the possibility of prostate cancer and would be a strong indication to do a complete work up.
