Surgery

Surgery is the oldest method of treating cancers, with the view to complete removal of the cancer from the body. Surgeons play many roles in management of a cancer patient, including taking biopsies, removing cancers, placing devices needed for treatment and, at times, assisting with pain management. Surgery in certain cancers is the most important aspect of the care, and cure may not be possible without it. This is true in patients with breast cancer, colon cancer, stomach cancer, non-small cell lung cancer, and many other cancers.
